How to Start Building an Audience in 2025 (Even If You're New)
As 2024 draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the impact you’ve had this year. Are you satisfied with the lives you’ve touched, the income you’ve generated, and the freedom—in time or money—you’ve gained? If not, don’t worry. This article will help you make a better plan for 2025. And it all starts with building an audience.
Why Would You Want an Audience?
If your goal is to build a sustainable business that allows you to create a greater impact—changing more lives, generating automated income, and gaining time and financial freedom—then building an audience is essential. An audience is the foundation of a business that helps you achieve these goals.
But let’s be clear: if these goals don’t resonate with you, this article might not be for you. Feel free to unsubscribe below—I’d hate to annoy you with more newsletters about this stuff!
If you’re still with me, let’s talk about why you do need an audience and how to build one in a way that’s simple and effective.
What Is an Audience, Really?
Some people get uptight about the word “audience” because it sounds showy or pretentious. An audience is a group of people who share a common interest in a specific topic, are seeking solutions to a particular problem, or are working toward a goal that aligns with what you offer. That’s it. We don’t need to overcomplicate it.
If the word “audience” feels awkward, think of it as your community, tribe, subscribers, or potential clients. Whatever you call it, the idea remains the same: a group of people who need or want to hear what you have to say.
And here’s the thing—you need them, and they need you. Without an audience, you have no one to help, no one to serve, and no one to share your solutions or knowledge with. Building an audience is a win-win situation for both sides.
You Don’t Need a Massive Audience
One of the biggest misconceptions about audience building is thinking you need a huge following. Hundreds of thousands of social media followers or millions of YouTube subscribers might sound great, but you don’t need them.
The aim is not to build an audience for the sake of building an audience!
This is not a popularity contest—and if you see it like that, you’ll be doomed to introspection and plagued by comparison.
No, the aim is to build the right audience.
These are people with a specific problem, the motivation to solve it, and at least an inkling of a desire to be helped by you.
Even a small audience of the right people can lead to incredible results.
Remember, quality beats quantity every time.
Niche Down, Baby
So, how do you find the right audience? The answer lies in niching. Niching is about narrowing your focus to a specific group of people with a particular problem you can solve.
For example, instead of targeting “people who want to lose weight,” narrow it down to “new moms who want to lose baby weight while managing a busy schedule.” The more specific you are, the easier it will be to attract the right people.

Choose a “Permanent” Platform
Where does your audience hang out online? Understanding this is key to connecting with them. While social media is great for promotion, you should also invest in a “permanent” platform—a place where your content lives online forever.
Examples of permanent platforms include:
- Podcasts
- Blogs
- YouTube channels
Unlike social media posts, which disappear quickly, content on these platforms remains searchable and shareable over time. Even if your audience is small, the right content can attract clients.

Create Content That Connects
Once you’ve chosen your platform, start creating content that speaks to the pain points, problems, or solutions your audience is seeking.
Your content doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does need to be relevant and valuable to your audience.
At the end of each piece of content, include a call to action (CTA) that encourages people to join your email list. Offer something valuable for free—like a guide, checklist, or mini-course—to help solve a specific problem quickly. This is a great way to build trust and establish a direct connection with your audience.
Use Social Media to Drive Traffic
Social media is an excellent tool for driving traffic to your permanent content. Share excerpts, sneak peeks, and reminders about your latest blog post, podcast episode, or video. Use these platforms strategically to guide people to your permanent content and then on to your email list where the real connection happens.
Simple Steps to Success
Building an audience doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these steps:
- Understand why you need an audience.
- Get clear on who your audience is by niching down.
- Choose a permanent platform to host your content.
- Create content that solves problems and offers value.
- Use social media to amplify your reach.
Do this consistently, and you’ll be well on your way to building a scalable online business in 2025. Let’s make the coming year your most impactful and successful yet!
